This project started with a paper that I wrote on an approach to Western music inspired by the theory of one-dimensional aperiodic tilings. I wrote Matlab code to generate some examples in the paper to illustrate the ideas. You can listen to some of this music here.
You can play around with these ideas in two ways:
- Make music directly in the quasimusic studio. There is a manual on how to use it. Being familiar with ideas of the paper would help.
- I’ve re-written the Matlab code in Python. You can access it here.
Please message me with any questions/comments. I’d also love to hear how and where you use it.
Because, in theory, music through this approach may sometimes be unplayable by humans, I decided to build a machine that is able to play it in the spring of 2025. I gave a short presentation about this at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), which included this short video.
